We focus on DNA sequencing as a key technology in DNA data storage field. Our research is based not only on, solving known sequencing problems but also on research of novel technologies for the future. Our team is committed to interdisciplinary innovation and excellence. We focus on sequencing and bioinformatics, and we’re coordinators of aproject called “DNAMIC” funded by the European Innovation Council. Our goal is to create an end-end DNA data archiving system.

The Bioeconomy Information Sharing and Analysis Center (isac.bio) is the international organization that addresses threats unique to the bioeconomy and enables coordination among stakeholders to facilitate a robust and secure industry. BIO-ISAC provides two-way sharing of information between and among public and private sectors as the central resource for gathering information on threats to infrastructure, spurring the development and evaluation of defensive tools.

The lab for intelligent storage and computing at the University of Texas at Dallas focuses on the emerging storage and computer systems including non-volatile memory, shingled magnetic recording, solid-state drive, DNA storage, etc. associated with big-data applications. We mainly investigate the scalability of DNA storage and leverage the coordination between digital systems and DNA storage.

The DNA Squiggleism group @ Monash University (Australia) combines deep learning techniques with information theory, communications theory, and signal processing methods to efficiently encode information in synthetic DNA and reliably extract it from the DNA squiggles produced by nanopore sequencing.

The Information Storage and Memories (ISM) at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology is conducting theoretical and applied research in the area of non-volatile memories and storage systems.

ISM specializes in information and coding theory as well as coding techniques and algorithms for various applications in storage and communications. One of the primary areas of research is coding for DNA storage. We study several problems related to clustering, reconstruction algorithms, error-correcting codes, and constrained codes which are specifically motivated by the DNA storage channel.

The key expertise of the COD group at TUM is coding theory and security, including coding for storage, post-quantum cryptography, coded computing, network coding, and privacy.

Our goal is to make communications and storage efficient, reliable, and secure. Coding for DNA-based storage is one of our focus areas. The biological processes in DNA-based data storage require codes that correct special errors such as losses of sequences and symbol errors as insertions, deletions, and duplications. We, therefore, work on insertion/deletion correction, duplication correction, investigating the channel capacity of the DNA channel, theoretical efficiency of DNA synthesis, and developing codes that are tailored to the whole DNA storage channel.

The Institute for Complex Molecular Systems (ICMS) at the Eindhoven University of Technology focuses on multidisciplinary science and education in the engineering of complex molecular systems.

It brings students and scientists from different disciplines together to create small molecular factories based on novel insights in self-assembly, sophisticated engineering tools, and modeling. The almost unlimited possibilities of nano-science and micro-technology will offer design rules for dynamic systems in which different time and length scales are integrated.

Biomemory is working with its customers to meet the challenge of global data growth for the coming decades. Biomemory is designing data storage solutions with the smallest possible carbon footprint.

Through domestication and adaptation of biological processes, our team continuously develops the most efficient data storage technologies.

Research in our lab currently focuses on two aspects of information processing viz. deciphering the information processing principles in life (systems biology) and building a computer out of biomolecules (synthetic biology). The key expertise of the lab is in error-correcting codes. With Zetabytes of data in need to be stored for long-term archival already today, the EC funded project OligoArchive (https://oligoarchive.eu) will develop the fundamental technologies needed to make DNA storage a reality. Running for three years, the project brings together all experts across Europe to build an end-to end prototype for DNA storage. The resulting technology will make DNA storage comparable to today’s archival storage in terms of speed but will make long-term data archival more cost-effective.
